Shottle Hall Wedding Guide

What It’s Really Like & Tips From a Photographer

If you’re planning a wedding at Shottle Hall, you’ve picked a venue that just works.

I’ve photographed weddings here a number of times, and it’s one of those places where everything flows naturally — no long walks between locations, no awkward transitions, just a really well set up space for a relaxed wedding day.

This isn’t a sales pitch — just a helpful guide based on real experience of photographing weddings at Shottle Hall.

What It’s Like To Get Married At Shottle Hall

Shottle Hall is a country house wedding venue in Derbyshire, near Belper.

One of the biggest advantages is that everything is on-site:

  • Getting ready rooms

  • Ceremony space (indoor and outdoor)

  • Reception and evening areas

  • Outdoor space for guests

👉 That makes a huge difference on the day.

It means:

  • no travelling between locations

  • less waiting around

  • and more time actually enjoying the day

From a photography point of view, it also helps everything feel more natural — guests settle in quickly, and the day flows without interruption.

Indoor & Outdoor Ceremonies at Shottle Hall

One of the really nice things about Shottle Hall is that you’ve got the option of both indoor and outdoor ceremonies.

Indoor ceremonies

The main ceremony room is bright, clean, and works really well for photos. It’s a fairly intimate space, so depending on guest numbers it can feel full — which creates a great atmosphere.

Outdoor ceremonies

If the weather plays ball, outdoor ceremonies at Shottle Hall are a brilliant option.

They’re usually set up in the gardens, with loads of natural light and a much more open feel. From a photography point of view, outdoor ceremonies give you:

  • stunnig views

  • more space

  • and a really relaxed atmosphere

👉 It also makes for a great transition straight into drinks and mingling afterwards.

The Flow Of The Day

One of the best things about Shottle Hall is how easy the day feels.

Because everything is close together:

  • Guests naturally move between spaces

  • There’s no downtime waiting for things to happen

  • And you don’t feel like you’re being pulled in different directions

👉 This is what helps create those natural, candid moments.

You’re not constantly being moved around — you’re just enjoying the day, and everything happens around you.

Best Spots For Photos

You don’t need to go far at Shottle Hall — which is ideal.

Some of the best spots are:

  • The front of the house and driveway

  • The gardens around the venue

  • The open space just beyond the building

👉 The key is keeping it simple.

A quick 10–15 minute wander is usually more than enough to get some relaxed couple photos without missing time with your guests.

Tips For A Relaxed Wedding At Shottle Hall

After photographing weddings here, a few things always make a big difference:

Keep group photos short

A small list (around 5–6 groups) keeps things quick and avoids turning it into a long photoshoot.

Make the most of the outdoor space

There’s loads of room for guests to spread out, which is perfect for natural interactions and candid moments.

Don’t disappear for too long

Everything you need is close by — there’s no need to go off for ages for photos.

Consider an outdoor ceremony if you can

If the weather allows, outdoor ceremonies here add a really relaxed feel to the day and flow nicely into drinks and mingling.

Give yourself breathing room after the ceremony & Confetti.

Even just 15–20 minutes to relax, chat, and let things happen naturally makes a big difference to how the day feels. A lot of photographers will rush you into your formals straight after the confetti. Not me, the 20 mins after the ceremony is one of the best times for candid photos of you and your guests.
