TORTWORTH COURT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Tortworth Court Wedding Photography | bride and groom looking at each other during their wedding ceremony

2024 is the year of many firsts for me, the year where I get to photograph many weddings at new (to me) wedding venues, and in this blog, we are off to Bristol for the wedding of Vicky & Ash, who were married at the end of April 2024 at Tortworth Court in South Gloucestershire, so let’s jump in and have a look at some of my favourite wedding images from the day.

The morning of the wedding day started with Vicky, her Mum, and her Bridesmaids getting ready in the Teulon suite, a high-ceiling room with some stunning windows bathing certain parts of the room in lovely contrasty light.

The image above was taken just after Vicky was helped into her wedding dress and just before I headed off to the Orangery for the wedding ceremony.

The Orangery at Tortworth Court is one of the most stunning ceremony rooms in which I have photographed a wedding ceremony, and the reason for that was the defused light.

Often with wedding ceremonies, there is always something I wish I could have changed, maybe the light was harsh and landing on the couple, maybe behind one of them was something big and distracting, maybe the space at the front of the room meant I was planted in one spot and had no room to move, but the Oragnery on this day - perfect.

Let’s geek out about the photo above of Vicky and her Mum walking down the aisle, in the gallery below, you will see some shots of the Bridesmaids coming down the aisle, and I always use the Bridesmaids as my ‘confirmation of composition’, and what I mean by that, is they are in a way my test shots to make sure that when the Bride comes down the aisle, I have my angles and composition set for the Brides entrance.

I got my standard shots of the Bridesmaids, nicely centered. Still, I felt I could get a more ‘focused’ image of Vicky, one with fewer distractions of the wedding guests, mobiles, and because the Orangery at Tortworth Court has space at the front for me to move, I was able to step to my left. In doing so I was able to crop out many of the distractions that would have taken the eye away from the important part which was Vicky and her Mum.

The ceremony was an emotional one, with Ash breaking down a few times during the vows, but he got through the legal bits, and the above shot of the first kiss using my favorite wide lens (Sony 20mm F1.8) gives you a great view of the Orangery and the guests clapping during the kiss.

After the ceremony, with the rain and wind from the morning having moved, we all went outside into the central garden at Tortworth Court to deal with the chaos of the confetti run.

After a quick pit stop in the Brunels Suite for the drinks and canapés, all the guests then headed back to the Orangery for the wedding breakfast and the speeches, and for the first time in 2024, Vicky the Bride was up first for the speeches - love it!

Tortworth Court Wedding Photography | bride and groom dance a private first dance

You will see in the main gallery below Vicky and Ash didn’t want to do a first dance in front of everyone but instead treated everyone to a cocktail and made a toast to everyone before the band kicked off the evening.

But, once the band had done their sound check, we snook into the Orangery for a little private first dance.

When turned around for the evening, the Orangery is a (again) stunning place; the string lights and the lights around the trees give the room a lovely look and feel, and if you have a great band, it all adds up to a great wedding reception venue.

So there we go, my first wedding at Tortworth Court, and I loved my time with Vicky and Ash.

Vicky knew what she wanted, and that’s why she booked me; they didn't want to manage me on the wedding day, they let me do my thing, and the results of that are a fantastic set of wedding images, some of which are in the gallery below.
