2024 is a year full of exciting firsts for me—including photographing weddings at new venues. In this blog, we head to Bristol for the beautiful wedding of Vicky & Ash, who celebrated their special day in late April 2024 at Tortworth Court, a stunning wedding venue in South Gloucestershire.

Let’s dive in and explore some of my favourite wedding photography moments from their unforgettable day.

The wedding morning started with Vicky, her mum, and her bridesmaids getting ready in the elegant Teulon Suite—a beautiful room with high ceilings and stunning windows that cast soft, dramatic light perfect for candid wedding photography.

The photo above captures a quiet, intimate moment just after Vicky was helped into her wedding dress—moments before I made my way to the Orangery at Tortworth Court for the ceremony.

The Orangery at Tortworth Court is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking wedding ceremony venues I’ve had the privilege to photograph, thanks largely to its beautifully diffused natural light.

In many wedding ceremonies, there’s often something I wish I could tweak—harsh lighting on the couple, distracting background elements, or limited space restricting my movement. But on this day, at this venue, everything was just perfect.

Now, let’s geek out for a moment over the shot of Vicky and her mum walking down the aisle. In the gallery below, you’ll also see the bridesmaids making their entrance. I use these moments as my ‘confirmation of composition’—test shots to ensure that when the bride makes her grand entrance, my framing and angles are spot on.

For the bridesmaids, I captured my usual centered shots. But for Vicky’s aisle walk, I wanted something more focused and intimate—an image free from distractions like guests and mobile phones. The spacious layout of the Orangery allowed me to shift slightly left, cropping out unnecessary elements and drawing all attention to the most important part of the frame: Vicky and her mum sharing a beautiful, emotional moment.

The ceremony was deeply emotional, with Ash visibly overwhelmed a few times during the vows—but he powered through the legal bits like a champ. The image above captures their first kiss, taken with my favourite wide-angle lens (Sony 20mm F1.8). It beautifully showcases the stunning Orangery at Tortworth Court, while also capturing the joyful reactions of guests clapping in celebration.

After the ceremony, with the morning’s rain and wind having passed, everyone stepped outside into the central garden at Tortworth Court to enjoy the joyful chaos of the confetti run—one of my favourite moments to capture as a documentary wedding photographer.

After a quick stop in the Brunel Suite for drinks and canapés, guests made their way back to the Orangery at Tortworth Court for the wedding breakfast and speeches. For the first time in 2024, the bride—Vicky—kicked off the speeches herself, and I absolutely loved it!

As you’ll see in the main gallery below, Vicky and Ash chose to skip the traditional first dance in front of their guests. Instead, they treated everyone to cocktails and raised a toast before the band kicked off the evening celebrations.

However, once the band finished their sound check, we slipped into the Orangery at Tortworth Court for a quiet, private first dance—just the two of them sharing a beautifully intimate moment away from the crowd.

When transformed for the evening, the Orangery at Tortworth Court becomes an even more stunning space. Twinkling string lights and soft illumination around the trees create a warm, magical atmosphere. Pair that with a great live band, and you’ve got all the ingredients for an unforgettable wedding reception in one of South Gloucestershire’s most beautiful venues.
