THE RIVER MILL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Mary and Nathan tied the knot in a beautiful, relaxed wedding at The River Mill in Derby – a unique, character-filled wedding venue tucked away in the heart of the city. With its exposed brickwork, riverside setting, and laid-back charm, it was the perfect backdrop for a day full of laughter, love, and plenty of energy.
The ceremony took place in the light-filled ceremony room – an intimate and warm space that suited their personal, heartfelt vows perfectly. With all eyes on them, Mary and Nathan shared words that resonated with everyone in the room, before sealing it all with a kiss and heading back down the aisle to a round of applause.
After a handful of relaxed group photos and a confetti moment outside, guests spilled onto the cobbled street for drinks in the late afternoon sunshine. It gave us the perfect chance to capture some natural family photos while everyone enjoyed the atmosphere.
The wedding breakfast took place back inside the main room, followed by speeches from Mary and Nathan, the best man, and a brilliant team effort from the bridesmaids – a mix of heartfelt words, laughter, and a few tears. Just the way speeches should be.
With the cake cut and the first dance kicking off the evening, the energy on the dancefloor carried right through the night. Before I wrapped up for the day, we headed outside for a wonderfully chaotic (and slightly tipsy!) sparkler exit – the perfect way to end a brilliant celebration.
This was my first time photographing a wedding at The River Mill in Derby, and it instantly became one of my favourite Derbyshire wedding venues. The exposed brick, huge windows and industrial character give the indoor spaces loads of atmosphere, while the surrounding Darley Abbey setting gives plenty of variety for photographs without needing to take couples away from their guests for long.
Whether you’re planning a cosy indoor ceremony or looking for a stylish, flexible space for your evening party, The River Mill works brilliantly for couples who want something a little different. It really lends itself to my relaxed, candid and documentary approach to wedding photography – letting couples enjoy their day while I concentrate on capturing the people, atmosphere and all those little moments happening around them.

THE RIVER MILL – VENUE INFORMATION
The River Mill is an industrial-style wedding venue at Darley Abbey Mills, just outside Derby city centre. Set inside a restored historic cotton mill within the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, the venue retains much of its original character, with exposed brickwork, timber beams and large windows throughout the main spaces.
The industrial interior gives The River Mill a very different feel from a traditional country house or barn wedding venue, while the surrounding historic mill buildings and riverside setting provide plenty of variety outside.
From a photography point of view, having everything in and around the same venue means couples can enjoy their day without needing to disappear for long periods for photographs.
